Spotted lanternfly is a phloem feeder β it pierces plant tissue and drinks the sugary sap flowing through vascular tissue just beneath the bark. While SLF can technically feed on more than 70 plant species, it is highly selective about where it spends most of its time.
Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is SLF's strongly preferred host for congregation, feeding, and egg-laying. Properties with mature TOH consistently record 3β5x higher SLF populations than comparable properties without it.
Many native trees are low-preference hosts β SLF will rarely choose them when TOH or grapevines are available nearby. Removing TOH and replacing it with low-preference natives creates a landscape that is actively unattractive to SLF. This is the one-two punch.
