Wayne County — confirmed for SLF in 2016, among Pennsylvania's earliest confirmed counties — is a predominantly forested, rural county in the northeastern Pocono corner where the Upper Delaware River forms the New York State border. Honesdale is the county seat. The county's outsized SLF spread risk comes from its massive seasonal tourism economy: Lake Wallenpaupack is one of the most visited recreational lakes in northeastern Pennsylvania, drawing enormous summer vehicle traffic from the New York City and New Jersey metro areas via I-84. These vehicles arrive from among the most heavily SLF-infested regions in the country, creating continuous SLF introduction pressure throughout the warm-weather season.
