Spotted Lanternfly inSomerset County, MDSPOTTED LANTERNFLY GUIDE
Somerset County is Maryland's southernmost Eastern Shore county, occupying the lower Delmarva Peninsula where the Chesapeake Bay meets a mosaic of farmland, tidal marshes, and watermen's communities. SLF was confirmed in 2024 β a significant finding in one of Maryland's most agriculturally dependent counties. Princess Anne, the county seat and home to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, is connected to the broader SLF threat via US-13 running north toward Salisbury and the infested upper shore. Crisfield, the self-proclaimed crab capital of the world, relies on pristine waterfront conditions for its blue crab and soft-shell crab industry; honeydew secretions from heavy SLF infestations can promote sooty mold that degrades outdoor processing environments. Poultry farming dominates Somerset's agricultural economy, and the feed grain crops β corn and soybean fields sprawling between Marion and Westover β face reduced vigor under heavy SLF feeding pressure on surrounding tree hosts. Deal Island and the county's extensive tidal marsh network provide some natural dispersal barriers, but boat and vehicle traffic between the shore and western Maryland ports ensures ongoing exposure.
Maryland is under a statewide spotted lanternfly quarantine as of March 2026. Moving regulated articles out of Maryland requires inspection.

Tree of Heaven in Somerset County, MD
US-13 through Princess Anne and Westover is lined with Ailanthus at road margins and provides the primary northward link between Somerset and Wicomico counties, channeling SLF advance down the peninsula. Wicomico River headwaters and Manokin River banks through Princess Anne support riparian Tree of Heaven stands. Agricultural access roads between Westover and Marion show Ailanthus at field edges and drainage ditches. Boat ramp areas at Crisfield and Deal Island can introduce egg masses via trailered watercraft coming from infested Bay-side ports.
