DeKalb County forms the eastern half of the core Atlanta metro and is under watch zone monitoring as SLF advances southward along the I-85 corridor through the Southeast. The county's diverse mix of dense urban neighborhoods, suburban corridors, and significant international communities in Clarkston create both high-traffic introduction risk and important community outreach opportunities. I-285 bisects the county and carries enormous freight volumes from SLF-infested states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. The South Fork Peachtree Creek and Snapfinger Creek corridors provide riparian habitat that could sustain early SLF populations. Georgia Dept of Agriculture has placed DeKalb on priority monitoring status given its direct highway and rail connections to confirmed SLF zones farther north.
