Heavy Infestation

Reston (Fairfax County) confirmed SLF in 2021 and now has one of the heaviest infestations in Fairfax County. As a planned community with extensive managed tree canopy, Reston's parks, lakes, and green corridors have become prime SLF habitat. The Dulles Toll Road and Silver Line Metro connect Reston workers to the broader DC metro infestation zone daily. Reston Town Center's outdoor dining and retail areas see large adult SLF populations each fall season. The W&OD Trail provides a documented spread corridor running through the heart of the community. VA quarantine lifted March 2025.

Primary SLF food source

Tree of Heaven in Reston, VA

Reston's planned community design β€” with extensive managed green space, lake corridors, and wooded trail networks β€” provides ideal SLF habitat wherever Tree of Heaven has established along trail margins and stream valleys. The W&OD Trail is a documented SLF spread corridor through Reston, with heavy adult counts in late summer. The Dulles Toll Road and Silver Line Metro corridor bring continuous SLF pressure from the broader Northern Virginia infestation. Tech corridor office parks with ornamental plantings and loading docks see significant SLF adult activity August through October.
